From the TNOTA President’s Desk
As we move through another dynamic season in occupational therapy, I’m reminded of the strength, adaptability, and dedication that define our professional community. Across Tennessee and beyond, occupational therapy practitioners, educators, and students continue finding new ways to innovate, advocate, and connect – themes that are reflected throughout this issue of the TNOTA newsletter.
In this issue, you’ll read about both the evolution of our profession and the people helping shape its future. You’ll take a look back at how the TNOTA Annual Conference has grown over the years while also looking ahead to the exciting opportunities this year’s conference will offer for learning, collaboration, and connection. You’ll also find an inside look at the advocacy work happening behind the scenes to protect and advance occupational therapy practice in Tennessee – work that directly impacts every OT practitioner and student in our state.
This issue also highlights important developments shaping the future of practice, including Tennessee’s participation in the OT Compact Agreement and the expanding conversations around assistive technology. One article offers a refreshing reminder that many practitioners are already integrating assistive technology into practice in ways they may not even realize. Another explores the importance of strengthening trust and collaboration between occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants, an essential component of effective teamwork and quality client care.
These initiatives and conversations are only possible because of engaged OT practitioners and students like you. Membership in your state professional association is more than a notation on a résumé. It’s an opportunity to help shape the future of occupational therapy, to network with others in this professional community, and to volunteer to showcase and further hone your skills as a current or future OT practitioner. Your involvement strengthens our collective voice, supports professional development opportunities, and ensures our profession remains responsive to the evolving needs of both practitioners and the communities we serve. Whether you attend events, serve on committees, advocate for the profession, mentor students, and simply stay informed, your engagement matters.
To the OT and OTA students and new graduates: Congratulations on reaching this important milestone. As you prepare to enter the profession, know that you are stepping into a field that is both deeply meaningful and constantly evolving. TNOTA is here to support you through mentorship, networking, advocacy, and continued learning as you transition from student to practitioner. Your energy, perspective, and passion will help shape the next chapter of occupational therapy in Tennessee.
Thank you for the work you do each day and for being part of this professional community. Together, we continue to strengthen, elevate, and advance occupational therapy across our state.
Warmly,
Stephanie Lancaster, EdD, OTR/L, ATP
