About This Course: In this presentation, the speaker will review common medications that may impact patient participation in occupational therapy sessions, such as those that may cause sedation, fall risk, or cognitive impairment. The concept of polypharmacy and how it can impact patient experience of medications will be discussed. Ways that an occupational therapist might have a positive impact on a patient’s medication regimen will be explored, in order to promote interdisciplinary care.

Course Objectives: 

  1. List classes of medications that can impact patient participation in rehabilitation therapy sessions
  2. Identify the impact of polypharmacy on patient tolerability of medications
  3. Explore ways Occupational Therapists can impact pharmacotherapy

Presenter: Bethany Murphy, PharmD, BCACP, BC-ADM, is a faculty member in the Union University College of Pharmacy. She is a pharmacist who is board certified in ambulatory care pharmacy, as well as in advanced diabetes management. Bethany role consists of teaching in the classroom and lab settings on campus, as well as in clinical practice at the Jackson Clinic, where she focuses on assisting patients and providers with management of chronic disease states, such as diabetes and heart failure.
