Southeast District Meeting

Thursday, August 13, 2020 6:30pm EST (5:30pm CST) via GoToMeeting and Aspire OT

Topic: "Utilizing the Concepts of Neuroplasticity and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) in Rehabilitation of Patients with Upper Extremity Hemiplegia/Paralysis"

Principles of neuroplasticity are applied to FES used in rehabilitation of patients with upper extremity paralysis. Randomized controlled trials utilizing FES demonstrate clinically significant gains in upper extremity function.

About the Presenter: Christy Aylies, PT graduated from Ohio University’s Physical Therapy program. She then relocated to Atlanta, GA and practiced as a PT for approximately 10 years, treating a variety of patients in several different settings. She has been a medical device manufacturer’s representative for many years, supporting and educating patients, orthopedic surgeons, psychiatrists, nurses, PTs & OTs.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand neuroplasticity and the principles of neuroplasticity, identify the neural pathways involved in upper extremity movement.

  2. Be able to describe functional electrical stimulation and why it is important in rehabilitation of stroke and cervical SCI patients with moderate to severe paralysis of the UE.

  3. Be able to identify the benefits of MyndMove FES therapy in rehabilitation of stroke and cervical (C3-T1) SCI patients with severe upper extremity paralysis.

CEU Opportunity: 1 CEU certificate = FREE for TNOTA members, $20 for non-members
