Topic: "Spinal Cord Injury and OT"

In this presentation, participants will gain a well-rounded understanding of the mechanism of spinal cord injury and the potential complications involved. The levels of injury and expectations for functional outcomes will be discussed at length.  Will review therapeutic interventions that can be implemented with this population as well as discussion of adaptive equipment and current technology.

About the Presenter: Valery Hanks, OTR/L, C/NDT is an Occupational Therapist at Pi Beta Phi Rehabilitation Institute at Vanderbilt Medical Center Bill Wilkerson Center in Nashville, Tennessee.  She provides outpatient based services as part of an interdisciplinary team for adolescents and adults with neurological impairments. Valery graduated from The University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in 2000 and has focused the entirety of her career treating people with neurological impairments.  In the community, she serves as the Secretary of the Tennessee Occupational Therapy Association and sits on multiple committees advocating for Occupational Therapy.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will develop a greater understanding of the spinal cord and spinal cord injuries.
  2. Participants will demonstrate ability to anticipate functional expectations dependent on level of injury.
  3. Participants will gain better understanding of therapeutic interventions and types of adaptive equipment for spinal cord patients.
