Topic: "A Deeper Look into Occupational Deprivation and Disruption"

This session will include a look into occupational deprivation and occupational disruption. The effects occupational deprivation may have on individuals, groups, and populations and what is the role of the OT practitioner in a pandemic. A discussion to include potential OT strategies in relation to occupational deprivation.

Presenter​s: Brooke Gentry, M.S., OTR/L and Laurie O'Brien, B.S., COTA/L 

About the Presenters:

Brooke Gentry, M.S., OTR/L, South College-Nashville Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Director. ​Brooke is an occupational therapist that holds a Bachelor of Science from Western Kentucky University a Master’s in Occupational Therapy from Milligan College. Brooke’s passion for teaching began while practicing in the acute care setting. She is an AOTA Certified Fieldwork Educator. Over the past 9 years, providing students with clinical instruction and didactic lectures ignited her desire to transition to become a full-time educator. Prior to working in the setting of academia she practiced in acute care at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She is LSVT-BIG certified and has also worked in the settings of inpatient rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities. In her free time, she enjoys running and spending time with her husband and 10-month old son.

Laurie O’Brien, B.S., COTA/L, South College- Nashville Occupational Therapy Assistant Academic Fieldwork Coordinator. Laurie is a certified occupational therapy assistant that holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and Associate of Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant degree. Laurie has over 20 years’ experience as an occupational therapy assistant and has experience working in the settings of inpatient psychiatric hospital, with adolescents and adults, inpatient rehabilitation, with a long history of working with the geriatric population in the skilled nursing and assisted living settings. She has also served as a rehabilitation manager with special interests in wheelchair positioning and developing wellness programs within the geriatric community. Laurie recently transitioned from the clinical setting into the role of the OTA Academic Fieldwork Coordinator at South College Nashville.

 

Lecture Objectives:

  • Differentiate between occupational deprivation and occupational disruption

  • Identify potential effects of occupational deprivation

  • Identify the role of the occupational therapy practitioners during a pandemic

  • Identify occupational therapy strategies in relations to occupational deprivation
