Join TNOTA for this FREE CE event for OT month. TNOTA’s OTD Capstone student, Cassie Howe, will share her Capstone project focused on helping OT practitioners and students in Tennessee understand the process for updating the OT practice act. Wednesday, April 20 from 7-8pm Central via Aspire OT.

Topic: We will be learning about the process required to make changes to the Rules and Regulations that govern OT practice in Tennessee

Presenter: Cassandra Howe, OTD/S, Cindy DeRuiter Blackwell, OTD, OTR/L

About the Presentation: As part of her doctoral capstone project, Mrs. Howe developed a resource to help OT practitioners and students understand how changes get made to the OT Rules and Regulations "practice act" in Tennessee. This presentation will give insight into this process and explore the lessons she learned along the way. 

Course Objectives:  

  • Attendees will be able to arrange the steps for making changes to the practice act in correct order by the end of the event.
  • Attendees will be able to summarize an estimated timeline for making changes to the practice act by the end of the event.
  • Attendees will be able to list at least one way they can be involved in the process of making changes to the practice act by the end of the event.  
  • Attendees will be able to recall how to track a bill while it moves through the legislative system by the end of the event.

About the Presenters: 

Cassie Howe is a third year occupational therapy doctoral student at Belmont University. She completed her undergraduate degree in psychology at Ball State University. Prior to enrolling in OT school she worked as a day services program coordinator for a non-profit that provides services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Following graduation from Belmont University Mrs. Howe has accepted a position as a pediatric therapist in Manhattan, KS. While attending Belmont University she has served as one of two class representatives, interview day ambassador, a student representative at the Meharry-Vanderbilt Interprofessional Education alliance, and is a member of BSOTA and Pi Theta Epsilon. Cassie is passionate about community access/involvement for adults and children with IDD and advocating for OT via involvement in state organizations.

 

 Dr. Cindy DeRuiter Blackwell is the president of TNOTA. She obtained her Master's and Post-Professional Doctorate from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Blackwell is a pediatric OT practitioner who has worked in outpatient settings, pediatrics, early intervention, home health, and academia. She is the Director of Medical Services at Project Play Therapy. Dr. Blackwell is passionate about disability rights, advocacy on behalf of the OT community, and empowering the next generation of OT practitioners.
