About this Chat: The presentation is an overview of what Hippotherapy is and how it is used as an intervention.
Chat Objectives:
- Participants will be able to define Hippotherapy as an intervention strategy for the use in an established occupational therapy treatment plan.
- Participants will be able to describe 3 functional purposes for using the horse's movement as a treatment strategy
- Participants will be able to list 3 considerations for identifying whether or not Hippotherapy is appropriate for a patient.
About the Speaker: Virginia "Ginny" Monahan, MOT, OTR/L is a Pediatric Occupational Therapist who graduated from Tennessee State University and now lives in works in south eastern Virginia. She first heard about occupational therapy in high school while volunteering for a therapeutic riding program. She earned her undergraduate degree in equine sciences, managed a herd of lesson horses for several years, then returned to grad school to earn her master's degree in OT. Her focus has always been on using the horse as a therapy medium for those patients who will benefit from such an intervention. Now in Virginia, Ginny is working with her company to design and implement a hippotherapy component for the children at her clinic. Ginny is currently enrolled in the American Hippotherapy Association curriculum to become AHCB certified.
